In a better world, I agree. I read twitter because I find it to be the best source for the aggregation of world news and news about how corrupt the GOP is. I refuse to sleep walk into the oligarchy. I don't want to become Argentina or Russia.
Books are great and free at the library. I read some in hard copy but normally I use an e-reader (KOBO for me), download books from the library and buy them online at a discount through BookBub. It's easy to carry an e-reader when I travel and it's great on an airplane or train.
I’m managing social media by carefully following a few select accounts, and not letting the app make recommendations. It’s not perfect, and X is continuing to degrade. Ads have moved past inappropriate and are approaching pornography. It’s still the best way to get local real-time sports news, so if I’ve been putting up with it.
I recently switched from using the Libby app to a kindle paper white. In summer we spend some time outside, and I wanted something where I could read in sunlight. I love my library. I stopped buying books 15 years ago, and instead make a monthly donation to the library for new content.
I’m more sci fi than you, but I recommend Old Man’s War by Scalzi.
I agree Rick. When I want to escape and have no interruptions, I visit the second floor (the quiet floor) of our local library.
There are many legitimate real information web sites still operating without needing to use social media. I leave the phone in the locker at the gym.
I basically stopped facebook and am seriously considering the same on twitter since it is 90% lies and computer-generated posts now since musk ruined it by using his evil immense wealth to buy it and trash it. Many news organizations have left it also although it was a great place to share news, causes, and updates for all manner of groups and advocates.
I've been thinking the same thing lately. I find myself losing hours of my life looking at some of the dumbest things and afterwards I ask myself why did I do that... 🤦♂️ I'm down to Instagram and LinkedIn. Instagram is getting overloaded with buxom women just walking around in tight outfits. I barely see any real photography anymore, it's sad. They will be the next to go...Also, I'm registered with 2 libraries and Bookbub for my books. Reading for free is the way to go! If you haven't yet you MUST read 'An Immense World' by Ed Yong. Best book I've read this year. AMAZING!
Books are my go to. I love a good story, about a real person, I need to finish Tim Matheson's autobiography, or a cozy mystery, or a rollicking tale from Sir Terry. But I get it about doomscrolling. That may be my resolution this coming year.
My daughter and grandson are now living in Japan. She is in the Navy. Hoping this digital photo frame will work internationally. In for one.

Loved Old Man’s War!
The book idea is sound, but you should consider Bluesky as well. No doom and gloom there.
I'm there, but tbh a lot of what I'm seeing is just unhappy news and opinion. I desperately need a break from both.
Thanks for the Loop! Have a great holiday!

No coupon for any additional picture frames. Bummer!
I’m still seeing it!
