Happy weekend, everyone! Short newsletter today… like others I’m troubled by world events and not really in a “Let’s all buy stuff!” headspace. So I’m just sharing the couple things I queued up earlier in the week. Hope you enjoy.
In the meantime, a simple plea for kindness. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to others. Easy to say, not always easy to do, but ultimately so important.
QUICK HITS
📚 Book lovers! Here’s a resource worth bookmarking: Free site Fantastic Fiction lists the books and/or book series for over 50,000 authors, and does so in chronological order. For example, I recently discovered (and fell in love with) Irish writer John Boyne; when I search him on Amazon I just get a mishmash of titles. Fantastic Fiction shows me his novels from oldest to newest, along with anything that’s schedule to be published in the future. Plus, it lists books recommended by Boyne himself. It may not sound like a big deal, but for anyone who loves to follow specific writers, Fantastic Fiction is, well, fantastic.
🎦 Recently I reviewed the HoverAir X1 camera drone for Yahoo, and to say I freaking loved the thing is an understatement. I suspect this could become a hot item for the holidays; there’s really nothing else quite like it. Anyway, you can order direct from HoverAir if you’re so inclined, or wait and see if it gets discounted in the next month or two. Me, I think supplies are going to be limited, so if you’re eyeballing this for yourself or someone else, don’t wait.
Stay safer behind the wheel: Mount your phone on your dashboard for just $10
If your car doesn’t have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, it’s a good idea to install a phone mount. Because, let’s face it, as dangerous as it is, you’re probably going to use the phone for navigation, podcasts and the like. At a minimum you should mount that screen as close to eye level as possible.
Here’s a cheap, easy and effective option: The Joyroom magnetic phone mount drops to just $9.84 when you clip the on-page 20%-off coupon and then apply promo code 30OSGK5A at checkout. It normally sells for $20.
Though designed with MagSafe-compatible iPhones in mind (basically any iPhone 12 or later), the mount can work with just about any phone that’s in a case. Just slip in the included metal plate and, presto, now your case is magnet-friendly. Note, however, that such an option can interfere with wireless charging.
The mount is compatible with most horizontal and vertical air vents (but not round ones). It’s super-easy to install, and once in place you can position your phone any number of ways. (In the winter, for example, you don’t want it directly in front of a vent that’s blowing heat, so you might move it off to the side.)
This is also a great option for content creators who like to record videos in the car! (I feel like every third TikTok video I see comes from a driver’s seat.)

When it comes to those vent clip dash mounts... Over the years I have tried a dozen of them and they just don't work for long. After a few days your phone, along with the clip winds up on the floor while you are driving somewhere. To fit the clip is just too thin to get a good grip. It's about physics not bad clips. Likewise a sticky dash mount will work pretty good until it gets summer heat that softens the sticky glue. My best has been the windshield glass mount with an arm long enough to bring the phone close at eye level. Even the suction cup only lasts about 3 years until the hot sun causes it to lose its grip.(Arizona sun). I have tried the vent mounts on Chevy, Dodge, Ford and Toyota all with the same results.
Many years of "thank you" Rick. Today it's for John Boyne who you recommended a while back and for Fantastic Fiction which I have added to my favorites.
