Get a 3-pack of Wi-Fi leak detectors for just $33
These are awfully cheap protection against insanely expensive water-damage repairs. Mine caught a kitchen-sink leak I'd probably have missed otherwise.

Greetings, deal-seekers! Hope you’re out enjoying some summer fun, playing pickleball, taking walks, maybe vacationing with friends. Me, I’m staring down the barrel of a rainy weekend that’s thwarting all my plans. Which state has the worst overall weather and why is it Michigan? 😭
QUICK HITS
😎 STAY COOL FOR CHEAP: A great way to beat the summer heat: a neck fan, which you can wear while sitting, walking, gardening, or whatever. (Added bonus: It can help keep mosquitos away from your face.) For a limited time, and while supplies last, Amazon Prime subscribers can get this Tunise Rechargeable Neck Fan with LED Display for just $13.20. (Reg. price: $32.99.) It’s available in a variety of colors; a few of them cost a few dollars extra.
The battery is good for 3-12 hours of runtime depending on which of the three speed settings you use.
💡 BRIGHT IDEA: It’s official: LED light bulbs are now nearly as cheap as the incandescents they replaced — at least while this deal is going on. For a limited time, and while supplies last, this Torkase A19 LED Bulb 100W-equivalent 4-pack drops to just $5 when you clip the on-page 20%-off coupon and redeem the 30%-off promo code (which you can do at checkout or just by clicking the Redeem button).
Here’s what that looks like at my end:
Just take note that these are not dimmable. Assuming that’s okay for you, this is a great time to stock up on bulbs!
Catch water leaks before they do any real damage
High on my list of household essentials: GoveeLife’s Smart Water Leak Detector. Here’s an example of why, taken from my own detector in my own home a few years back:
Not only did I hear the sensor’s loud audible alarm, I got this alert on my phone (because what if I wasn’t home at the time?). The thing is, it was a pretty small leak – the kind you might not notice until some damage had been done.
The sensors can detect water that drips on them from above or pools beneath their conductive feet. In addition to underneath sinks, I have them positioned next to my hot water heater, my washing machine, and so on – anywhere a leak might happen.
And you ask any plumber for nightmare stories, they’ll tell you plenty about leaks that occurred while a homeowner was away. With a detector like this, you could get a friend or neighbor to swoop in and hopefully deal with the problem before facing thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.
For a limited time, and while supplies last, the GoveeLife Smart Water Leak Detector (3-pack) drops to $32.72 when you click Redeem 15% off on the product page or apply promo code FDO9G576 at checkout. Regular price: $55 (and even then very much worth it, IMHO).
I simply cannot recommend this highly enough. It’s a simple, effective ounce of prevention for a ridiculously affordable price. Along with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, every home should have a set of leak detectors.
(Pro tip: Check with your homeowner’s-insurance provider, as you may be able to get a policy discount after installing these.)
(Pro tip #2: There’s apparently a newer version of this product, which I haven’t tested but should be as good or better. It’s not currently discounted, but for $60 you get four sensors instead of just three.)
PLAYLIST
🍿 Mickey 17 (HBO Max)
I’m struggling to describe Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi dark comedy, so I’ll keep it simple: It’s like no other sci-fi dark comedy I’ve seen before, and I mean that in the best possible way.
Imagine, if you will, that science has made it possible to 3D-print human replicas. Now imagine using those replicas to perform dangerous, deadly tasks. If one dies, no problem: print a new one.
That’s all I’ll say. While the satire may be a bit heavy-handed and the overall plot a little simplistic, I definitely enjoyed the ride.

🍿 Mountainhead (HBO Max)
I can just imagine the pitch meeting for this, another dark comedy: “Four gazillionaire tech bros meet at a mountain retreat to conduct a little business and have a little fun — until things go seriously off the rails.”
But probably not in the way you think. I’ll give you a non-spoilery hint: This smart, biting satire was directed by Jesse Armstrong, creator of Succession. If anyone can paint a picture of utter buffoons with too much money, power, and ego at their disposal, it’s this guy.
Mountainhead is way in my wheelhouse, a movie about technology — what’s happening with it right now, what may happen in the not-too-distant future (and it’s not a pretty picture). If you’re tempted to draw comparisons between these four guys and, oh, Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg — well, go right ahead.
Critics weren’t especially kind to this, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It scared the bejeezus out of me, which was undoubtedly the point. The takeaway: “We’re all doomed and this is exactly why.”

📗 Writers & Lovers (by Lily King)
I remember this book getting a ton of hype when it debuted in 2020, but recall someone steering me away from it, saying I probably wouldn’t like it.
I have a bone to pick with you, someone! I may not be Lily King’s intended audience, but I had no trouble relating to — and rooting for — Casey, a young woman coming to grips with grief, relationships, the writing life, and just life in general. Like all great characters, she’s messy and broken and prone to mistakes, but you like her anyway.
King writes the way I wish I could; simply, effortlessly, richly. I love it when a writer dances around the edges of a character’s thoughts or actions, leaving me to fill in the blanks. King cha-chas with the best of them.
Ironically, I’m going to caution my fellow men-folk readers: This might not be your cup of tea. I’ve always loved female protagonists, whether in books (like this one and Great Circle), movies (I’m as happy watching A League of Their Own as I am Die Hard), or Star Trek (Voyager remains my favorite incarnation of the show). But if you prefer manly men doing manly things, look no further than City of Thieves.
