Rick, I am so sorry that you lost your job. I very much enjoy everything that you put out, which includes your amusing podcast with someone named Dave. I also enjoy your recommendations on what media to catch and what to skip. You also sound like a very good person. Hang in there. All the Best! Dan

Love your recommendations. I've used your deals for years. I've gotten hundreds of dollars back from Rakuten, for example. But FWIW, I hate A.I. "artwork." So I would ask you not to use it in your newsletter. Thanks!

we should have a contest to see who has received the most $$$ back from Rakuten.

I will definitely use it sparingly... I don't love it either, but sometimes it fills a need. (I didn't think anyone wanted a look at MY shocked face, lol...)

I'm sorry about the gig, Rick, but I agree it's good and bad news. Definitely sorry about the way it happened, but brutality and sadness is what I expect when an investment firm takes over a business, and I'm sure there will be more to come at Yahoo. At least it isn't hanging over you any longer, and I'm glad it won't be a hard landing. And if it means more independence for you and more Cheapskate for us, yes, I'd say that's good news.

In that vein, I'm letting you know that I would not mind paying a modest subscription fee to help that along. That may not sound very cheapskate of me, but it is, actually. First of all, you've helped me save plenty of money or find value over the years, not just with alerts but with good shopping habits and tricks. Second, if subscriptions mean a more independent, happier, more prolific Deal Secrets, I'll come out ahead--a sound investment in future savings and value.

I voted for once a week, by the way. More Deal Secrets is better, of course, but on the other hand I'm wary of my inability to resist a great deal, whether or not I need or want the thing!

I feel like this happened to a friend. You come across as a really good guy. Wishing you the best.

Long time follower since CNET days. Even though I don’t need any more air fryers or digital picture frames (the wife hates uploading pics) I have bought many great things you have found. I think the more visibility you have the more people will buy so several times a week will help those little commissions.

so by omission, you apparently need more blue-tooth speakers but not air fryers or digital picture frames.

i am happy to send the dozen or so i bought from Ricks recommendations but kept replacing.

Rick, I'm so disappointed and sad to read about your job situation. I've followed you religiously since you CNET days. Your insight and advice is wonderful (and I have a whole bunch of tech gadgets, thanks to your articles - and much to my wife's chagrin.) PLEASE hang in there and keep doing what you're doing. With tech constantly changing and innovating, the public needs someone like you who can bring it to us with heart, honesty, and humor. Stay the course.

I'm sorry to learn you and several of your colleagues are without a job.

Truth be told, I've been unemployed more times than I care to count, and although I'm in a different industry, this is a good time of the year for job hunting.

Good luck, onward and forward.

Also, once a week is good. Especially when there's like 5 things to go through!

Thank you for doing what you do!

I think once per week is good as a regular cadence. But I also wouldn't be opposed to also a spur of the moment one for a single item if a really good, short term deal comes up that might not last until the weekly one.

Rick, sorry to hear about losing your job but I am positive that something better will come along. I’d like it if you could not only give us deal recommendations but also some urgent news. AI is not only taking away jobs, but its environmental impacts are astronomical: land grabs of 500 to over 1,000 acres, carbon emissions, water consumption for cooling, and the minerals mined to support it. I’m glad we have Earthjustice fighting some of this, but will it be enough? Using ChatGPT instead of a Google search uses 10 times more electricity!

Howdy Rick,

Sorry to hear about your job status... 🤬

Have always enjoyed and quite often taken advantage of your deal suggestions. A few times a week sounds good unless a really good deal comes through. Not sure my wallet could survive everyday deals 😁

Good luck with the job hunting,

Efren

P.S. Reckon I should send you some coffee 😊

Daily is better because you forget about it if it’s sporadic. I just want Rick back in my texts so I can buy another speaker, air frier, drone or headphones I don’t need. Who else has their box of Rick stuff in a spare room but keeps buying anyway cuz they’re fun and inexpensive and they like the little dopamine rush?

I'm sincerely so sorry you've lost your job. I truly mean that. It seems to be happening more and more in the tech field. My son has recently faced this recently in the biotech industry, however his situation has nothing to do with AI. He has 2 young children so it's been a struggle. Keep the positive attitude going.

Hi Rick - I have been reading your newsletter for years and always pick up something interesting. I love the way you include books to read and movies and TV to watch. You are an excellent writer - I like your style. You will be a loss to the company. AI is great, but it can’t replace the human touch.

So sorry. I’ve been following for years so can’t wait to see what is your next chapter. I would request that, at the bottom of each email, you remind us how to make sure you get your commission from Amazon links. I know I’m never quite sure if you earn it if I put it in my cart and come back later via the Amazon app to buy it. Or if I put multiple things in my cart before going to your link do you get a commission for everything in my cart?

Glad things are going in the right direction. Miss hearing daily deals on the regular. FYI your deals were the best. The new guy at CNET not so good.

Hi Rick, I’ve been a fan from the early days of CNET. Thank you for all the deals over the decades. You have saved us hundreds of dollars.

You are multitalented and that has paid off for me over the years. One door closes, but another opens, sometimes unexpectedly. Keep positive! Take a vacation and zen out. Wishing you the best, Michael

Rick, sorry to hear that nobody likes to be made off especially in our later years. You’ve done such a fine job. Thank you for all your posts and I wish you luck on your journey. Have a mighty fun day.
